In order to assess the current situation, the main library at 355 Schoenbeck Rd., Wheeling, completed engineering studies on the building in 2010 and 2013 and community focus groups in 2012. These studies determined there were several mechanical and building issues that needed to be resolved for the building to operate as cost-efficiently as possible. For example, we currently have an all electric building that is very inefficient for heating and cooling the facility.
The library also lacks sufficient meeting and classroom space to serve our members’ needs. The current building is 46,000 square feet, which is inadequate to serve our population of 67,000. Almost 15,000 square feet will be added to the building.
